How listings are ranked
Consumer Rights Directive art. 6a · Regulation (EU) 2019/1150 art. 5
This page explains the main parameters that decide which listings appear where, and how each one weighs. It is written for buyers; the same disclosure is required towards business sellers under the Platform-to-Business Regulation.
1. Paid placement — the strongest parameter
A seller may promote a listing as featured. Featured listings appear in a dedicated block, ahead of ordinary results for the same view. This is the only parameter that is bought rather than earned.
- Up to 10 featured listings are shown at once.
- When more than that are active, they rotate every 1 minutes (or randomly on each page load when rotation is disabled) so the same lots do not hold the block indefinitely.
- Promotion costs €0.50 per day or €1.00 per week.
- Featured status is always labelled on the listing itself. It never changes a listing's relevance, only its position.
2. Time left — auctions closing soon rank higher
Among listings that are otherwise comparable, auctions nearing their end time are shown first. This is a relevance signal, not a paid one: it reflects the fact that a lot closing in an hour is more useful to a buyer than one closing in a week.
3. Category and search match
A listing's category and the words in its title and description decide whether it appears at all for a given browse or search. Exact matches rank above partial ones. Sellers cannot pay to appear for a search they do not match.
4. Recency
Newly published listings rank above older ones within the same relevance band.
5. Seller signals
A seller's rating and their record of completed sales are used as a light tie-breaker. They cannot lift a listing above a better match, and a poor rating does not hide a listing.
What does not affect ranking
- Whether the seller is a business or a private person.
- The price of the item.
- Whether the listing accepts a particular payment or delivery method.
- The market domain you are browsing on — both domains show the same catalogue.
For business sellers
Under art. 5 of Regulation (EU) 2019/1150, a seller may:
- promote a listing, which is the one parameter that can be bought (see §1);
- improve the relevance of a listing by choosing an accurate category and writing a complete, specific title and description;
- earn rating and completion signals through completed sales.
Changes to these parameters are announced in the terms before they take effect, with at least 15 days notice, as art. 3(2) requires.
